The following is an article that I had received from Yahoo Alerts. I had signed up to receive alerts pertaining to psychology related subject matter. Well the following article was one of the list sent by Yahoo Alerts recently. I believe the article is extremely informative explaining how waiting can be a non stressful process. A bunch of handy tips are giving for businesses, or individuals who may provide a service to eliminate the negativity of waiting. Also I wanted to showcase this article because waiting to make money or add to the money you have already can be stressful. No individual likes to wait for something for to long I believe most individuals can agree to that statement. Here is the article hope you enjoy and learn from it.

Success File: The Psychology of waiting

By Bob Levoy

Federal Express says “waiting is frustrating, demoralizing, agonizing, aggravating, annoying, time-consuming and incredibly expensive.”

And one place people most hate to wait is in a doctor’s office.

How long will patients remain tolerant about waiting beyond their appointment time? According to a study of 10,000 patients interviewed by the National Research Corporation the answer is l5 minutes.

Beyond that, if more time passes without an explanation, patients meeting in focus groups universally agree they would be angry, saying they would be “ready to leave the office.”

The following are some psychological truths about waiting, along with some suggestions to reduce anxiety associated with it.

• Uncertain lengths. Waits of uncertain length seem longer. Every 10 minutes have a staff member give waiting patients an update of approximately how much longer it will be. Avoid such phrases as “I can’t promise anything” or “I can’t say for sure. It’s a zoo today.”

• Extended delays. Extended delays, especially those without any explanation, are exasperating. If the delay is more than 15 minutes, allow patients to reschedule or run an errand and return.

If possible, call patients ahead of time and explain the delay, and then give them the option to reschedule or not.

• Unoccupied time. Occupied time feels shorter than unoccupied time. For example: At the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, part of the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, patients can do research or check e-mail on available computers.

Aside from that, two walls of video screens play educational videos or lighter fare like “I Love Lucy.” A volunteer distributes bottled water, coffee, or tea.

• Unexplained waits. The frustration of unexplained waits is amplified by what is perceived as unfair waits.

For example: A newly arrived patient is seen ahead of a patient who arrived on time and has
Experience WAVE Pro Elite – The Next GEneration of Vibration Therapy
been waiting. This is a violation of the age-old principle, “first come, first served.”

There are a number of reasons why this might happen. Let those who have been patiently waiting know the reason.

• Unconcerned staff. The annoyance of waiting is also magnified when doctors and staff members don’t seem concerned or apologetic about the long delay. Patients who are kept waiting deserve an apology. “But not,” say focus group participants, “in a perfunctory way that makes the words meaningless.”

“It’s a serious problem when doctors are habitually late,” says Martha Hamilton, executive director of Tri-River Surgical, a four-clinic practice in Pittsburgh. “It makes patients feel undervalued. And that,” she adds “equals bad public relations.”

Hamilton says there are other dangers too. In an era when managed care organizations and other payers are demanding data on patient satisfaction, persistent tardiness in a doctor’s office can lead to declining scores.

From the success files: Among items on the Web site of Ian Shuman a dentist in Baltimore is his “Philosophy of Time,” which states:

“We know that you have reserved time in your busy life because caring for your dental health is important to you. We value your time and we pride ourselves on running on schedule.”

Do you have a philosophy of time? Does your staff know it? Has it been put into practice?

“If you can stay on time for appointments 90 percent of the time,” says Neil Gailmard, an optometrist in Munster, Ind., “you will stand out as a shining example in a sea of mediocrity. Becoming an ‘on time practice’ is good for patient relations, and it reduces stress on your staff.”

Simple Promotion Tips

The following briefing is some of the promotion techniques I have used to promote my blogs. Take advantage of messenger status headlines. Yahoo messenger has the function to allow user to set a headline and make a hyperlink. I leave my messenger service logged on 24/7 with my status as Mr.Psy Blog. MSN has the same function to change messenger status too. Emails are excellent promotion tools as well. I have set my mail option so all my emails have the signature of my blog site hyper linked. So whenever I send an email to an individual they will see my link at the bottom of their email. Networking sites are beneficial in promotion sites like Myspace, Black Planet, Facebook, Tagged, and Hi5 are good source to use. I advise readers to sign-up to forums and message boards. These sites will allow you to a wide range of internet surfers in a short time frame. Most message boards and forums allow you to create a profile so you can promote your blog this way. Well that’s all the tips for this post. Hopefully this information can help someone. Please remember to support this blog. Before you leave the site click on a Google ad to add to the blog click. The Adventure of Making Money Online

August 21, 2009 2 comments

Well, I am trying to give the twitter network site a spin in making money. Like most individuals in the economy I am trying to find a new source of income. I have tried to apply for work in my town, and to this point I have had no success. Honestly, I am beginning to feel discouraged and depressed. But hopefully god will guide me in this new adventure to gain some new revenue. Before I decided to do this I have been using my academic experience to make some side money. I have three degree all in the field of human services. Those degrees are an associates degree in Human Services, bachelors of arts in Psychology, and a masters in Science of Psychology. So I have helped tutor students up til this point in time. Well I have told about myself. I would like to read about you tell me your story, and thank you for reading my blog. Please come back often.

APA format

As I sit here on twitter.com I notice that a majority of college students hate APA format. Personally I can not blame them! when I first started college at the community college level I had no clue of what APA format was. I honestly believe the college system should create a APA formatting course as an elective. I say this because I did not fully understand APA formatting until I enrolled to receive my Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology. APA formatting has so many rules and exceptions that a one week or two week review is not sufficient for understanding. I encourage individuals reading this blog to not be easily discouraged by APA formatting. Understanding the format style is not an overnight process even I am still learning new rules of APA, and I have been writing in the style for 8 years now!!!

I Just Want To Be Successful

August 21, 2009 Leave a comment

If your reading this post surely the concept of being successful is understandable. With all the stressors that life can bring to an individual hopes of being successful becomes important each day. For me to be successful would be to support my immediate family and have a stable source of income. Other things I include is having a safety nest in my bank account and being able to splurge when I get paid, and not have to live from pay check to pay check. Being successful can be a reality, but the main issue is how long are most individuals willing to hold out to gain success. I want to encourage anyone reading this post to stay assertive. Nothing that is worth having will happen easily, or overnight.

As I become more use to the concept of blogging, and being a blogger I have been getting new ideas. So, I was thinking, I should post weekly psychological quotes by psychologist. The one for this week is from Alfred Adler. Below is a biography and the information is provided by encarta msn encyclopedia, and the quote is provided by wikipedia.

Alfred Adler Biography

Meanings are not determined by situations, but we determine ourselves by the meanings we give to situations.
